FAQ
Are Orthomol products actually useful and advisable?
Yes. Orthomol products are defined as either foods for special medical purposes (FSMP) or food supplements. FSMP are used for complaints, illnesses and disorders as part of treatment with nutritional medicine. Food supplements help to meet the need for micronutrients if it is difficult to supply these via the daily diet or because there is an increased need due to certain situations in life (e.g. pregnancy).
Is there any evidence that Orthomol products really work?
The composition of the products is based on scientific criteria, including studies that examine the use of micronutrients and the influence of nutrition in various areas of use. For many Orthomol products there are special studies on specific issues. We are happy to provide experts with the relevant information. Unfortunately we are prevented by law from sending studies to persons without medical and scientific training.
Why are Orthomol products so expensive?
Orthomol invests in the quality of raw materials, develops production processes that conform to the highest European quality standard for foods and manufactures its products exclusively in Germany. We voluntarily arrange for our quality management system to be audited and certified by the German Technical Control Board (TÜV Rheinland) at regular intervals. We are able to track every single one of our products back to its source and our customers are able to check the authenticity of every product using the package code. In addition, we invest in specialist expertise, scientific know-how and a special service. Our team of medical experts, natural scientists and nutritionists provides personal and competent answers to hundreds of questions from physicians, pharmacists and consumers every month.
What are the functions/benefits of the individual micronutrients?
Micronutrients have a number of different beneficial characteristics and features that have been confirmed by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). A list of the most important micronutrients is available under Vitamins & Co. with descriptions in accordance with the requirements stipulated by the EFSA.
Isn’t it possible to fulfil my need for micronutrients just by following a healthy diet?
Yes, as long as you are healthy and do not have special needs. However, you need to ensure that you always eat a balanced and varied selection of foods with a large quantity of fresh products. People who are sick, recovering from illness or experiencing special situations such as pregnancy frequently have an increased need which is difficult to meet with a normal diet. In these cases it can be a good idea to consume additional micronutrients. Nutritional studies for the German Federal Government* show that many people in Germany fail to meet the recommended nutrient levels in their daily diet.

Do the micronutrients in Orthomol products enter the body at all, or do they rather prevent each other from being absorbed?
It is correct that certain micronutrients such as calcium and iron, for example, are absorbed via the same metabolic pathway. However, Orthomol products contain a balanced dosage of micronutrients in a suitable combination. The dosage does not exceed the capacity of the absorption pathways, meaning that the various micronutrients do not have to compete with each other. Other micronutrients (such as vitamins C and E) complement each other and are particularly effective when they can work together as a team.
Are Orthomol products also available without iodine?
Several forms of administration for our products allow you to omit the iodine tablet. We would be happy to provide you with advice.
Do Orthomol products contain gluten?
Orthomol products are gluten free (in accordance with the definition specified in the Codex Alimentarius (WHO and FAO), this corresponds to a content of max. 0.002 g gluten per 100 g end product). This information can also be found in the package leaflet for each product.
Do Orthomol products contain fructose?
Some of our products contain fructose, others are fructose free. For example, the following products do not contain fructose: Orthomol Cholin Plus, Orthomol Veg one, Orthomol Vision, Orthomol Vitamin C depo.
Are Orthomol products free of lactose?
Orthomol products (apart from Orthomol Sport protein and Orthomol Sport recover) are lactose free. In accordance with the recommendation of the GDCh (Society of German Chemists), this corresponds to a content of max. 0.01 g lactose per 100 g consumable end product).
Why are there so many pills in the variants with tablets and capsules?
Orthomol products are available in up to four different forms of administration. In cases where the tablets/capsule variant contains too many tablets, there is frequently an alternative form of administration. The development of Orthomol products is based on the principle of orthomolecular nutritional medicine which specifies that a sensible combination of micronutrients should be consumed instead of individual micronutrients. This is because many micronutrients complement each other in their function, such as the antioxidants vitamin C and vitamin E.
